Rev. Roger “Papa” Barkley, Sr., 61, loving husband of Bennie “Nana” Barkley died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the UK Medical Center from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident.

A native of Georgetown, he was the son of the late Ben Craig and Nancy Elizabeth Jones Barkley. A member of the Revival Tabernacle in Lexington, he was an ordained Southern Baptist Minister since 1977 and head of the Barkley Family Ministries. He has pastored in IL, LA and KY. It has been said that Roger preached more between songs and through songs than he did as a pastor. He was also a Navy Seabee.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Roger (Dianna) Barkley, Jr., Frankfort, Keith (Tabatha) Barkley, Stamping Ground and Curtis (Julia) Barkley, Georgetown; four grandchildren: Amanda, Derrek, Chelsea and Tanner Barkley; three brothers, Lloyd (Joelyn) Barkley, Owensboro; Frank (Betty) Barkley, Georgetown and Michael (Jane) Barkley, Lexington; one sister, Mickey (Ernie) Burge, Stamping Ground; special aunts, Barbara (Eugene) Burge and Mabel (J.C.) Shelton, all of Stamping Ground, one brother-in-law, Bud Edwards, Georgetown and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Edwards.

A Celebration of Life and Worship will begin at 1:00PM Saturday, December 26, 2009 at the Revival Tabernacle, 1820 Versailles Road, Lexington. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday until time of services. Johnson’s Funeral Home, Georgetown is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to:
